Build Better Packaging

A Practical Master Class on the Essentials of Coating, Printing and Bonding

Due to the ever-increasing demand for robust, single-serve, functional and attractive solutions, the packaging industry has grown by around 100% in the last 10 years. At the same time, it has never been more important for converters to offer increasingly innovative solutions in terms of design, functionality and the range of materials used. In particular, the coming ‘green revolution’ brings significant challenges for design and production, especially when incorporating materials such as rPET or bio-polymers.

Various types of coatings, including adhesives and inks, play a key role in the process of packaging optimization. For all forms of coating, it is essential to understand and match the surface properties of the base material with the properties of the coating being applied, i.e. wettability, drop spreading, dye uptake, short/long-term adhesion, appearance, print quality. In addition to reviewing the science behind coating, printing, and bonding in packaging, in this seminar we take a practical approach to surface testing, exploring some of the basic tools available and how they can be incorporated into everyday processes in both production and development.

Course objectives

  • Basics of static and dynamic surface tension
  • Basics of contact angle, drop spreading and adhesion analysis
  • Choosing the right inks and coatings and applying them effectively
  • Dealing with coating defects
  • Preparing and activating surfaces with plasma, corona, flame or chemical pre-treatments
  • Safeguarding against production errors
  • Hands-on lab session

Our know-how for your applications

Our team of experts brings extensive practical experience from both science and technology and combines the best of both worlds in this event. The course imparts the necessary knowledge from the subject areas of contact angle measurement, surface free energy and pretreatment, and the technical aspects of the measuring instruments. Using various application examples from the coating and printing sector, you will develop solutions together with our seminar team and expand your skills with current best practices from the industry.

Costs and Registration

The event is free of charge. Regardless, please register via Eventbrite as space is limited. The registration deadline is October 31, 2022.
